The Associated Press weekly polls were released today, with Valpo moving up from fifth to fourth in the Class 4A poll, joined by Munster up from seventh to fifth. The biggest moves were in the lower classes, with South Central falling out of the 1A poll and Hanover Central, which beat S.C. last week, picking up some votes in the 2A poll. Also in 2A, Bishop Noll joined Wheeler in the rankings, moving in at ninth. In the girls poll, as voted on by the IGCA, Merrillville joined the 4A poll, entering at No. 6 with its undefeated record. In the 1A rankings, Kouts dropped a spot from fourth to fifth and Boone Grove held onto its No. 8 ranking in 2A. The polls follow, with the Region teams in bold.

Editor’s note: Crown Point 11-year-old Sam Barloga contacted The Times to learn how to be a sportswriter. On Friday, the Wheeler Middle School student worked with Times staff writer Hillary Smith and helped cover the Kankakee Valley at Hobart girls basketball game. Below is the story Sam filed. BRICKIES SURVIVE By Sam Barloga HOBART | Hobart’s girls basketball will improve to 10-0, but it was not easy. With a lead as big as 14, the Lady Brickies looked like they would take Kankakee Valley down, easily. Saturday December 12, 2009

Three long-standing pool records were broken at the Hobart Winterfest Invite on Saturday. Bridgette Ruehl from Lowell topped the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke marks that dated back to 1993 and 1995, respectively. Tori Klimczak of South Central erased the 50 free standard which had stood since 1999. Tuesday December 8, 2009

I was at Lake Central Tuesday afternoon to interview Indians wrestling coach Rod Wartman for a story. One of the highlights of our conversation was Wartman’s hunger for his team to win a sectional title this season. Munster has won the E.C. Central Sectional the past two years, a fact that doesn’t sit well with L.C. The Indians won sectional titles in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons before Munster started its recent run. And Wartman said his team’s quest to reclaim the throne will hinge on its depth. “(We lost to Munster) because of, for lack of a better word, our ‘B’ wrestlers didn’t come through like their ‘B’ wrestlers did,” Wartman said. “We’ll still be at the top in our good (weight classes), but it’s gonna be the rest that determine how we score at that tournament.” L.C. had about 50 young men practicing Tuesday. We shall see if Wartman can yield quality depth from a huge roster. - Nate Ulrich

With two of the tallest players on the floor Tuesday against Munster, the Lake Central girls basketball team was still out-rebounded as the Mustangs picked up 23 defensive boards with 13 offensive. The discrepancy for the Indians: 13 defensive and eight offensive.
That the Indians won 45-41 against Munster had more to do with the 'Stangs' turnovers than what the Indians could do with put-backs. "If we don't rebound against anybody, it's a disgusting game. If we don't rebound against Valpo on Friday, it's going to be even worse," Lake Central coach Leslie Iwema said. "We're going to be working on that for the rest of the week. It's going to be an interesting week." For the Indians, 6-foot-6 Andrea Kras led her team with seven rebounds, including three in the fourth quarter while 5-10 Britney Tuskan had five rebounds. On the Munster side of the stat sheet, 5-11 Gabby Roque had 11 rebounds, seven of them defensive and Jennifer Walton (at 5-7) and Alex Fimbianti (at 6-1) had seven total rebounds each. "We did a good job on the boards and they only scored 45 points," Munster coach Matt Backs said. "But they caught us in a few defensive lapses and got it back to Andrea and got right back in it." - Hillary Smith |
