Blackhawks on the move
Posted by: Big Cat at 2:12PM EST on February 14, 2010
A season ago, Westville won its first postseason game in John Marshall's reign as girls basketball coach.
Now the Blackhawks are in the sectional title game first the initial time in Marshall's 11-season reign.
Westville (11-10) meets heavily-favored Class A No. 5-ranked Oregon-Davis in Monday's championship.
That doesn't stop Marshall from enjoying the journey.
Westville outscored South Central 14-5 in the final quarter to win 36-31 in Saturday's semifinals.
The Satellites defeated Westville 34-26 on Jan. 12.
"I told our girls that we let one get away earlier," Marshall said. "If we played smart, there was no doubt we could compete."
Marshall said S.C. switched to a man-to-man defense in the final period, and Blackhawks senior Brandy Bogart took advantage of the move. Bogart scored eight of her team-high 11 points in the frame.
"I knew Brandy would be a tough matchup for them," Marshall said. "She played up high, and I wanted her to take it to the hoop.
"South Central became very aggressive, and they kept fouling us. We did a good job at the line."
Westville was 8-of-13 from the stripe, including Bogart's 4-for-4 effort.
"Brandy did great for us," Marshall said of Bogart, who added 11 rebounds and six blocked shots. "We've been pretty balanced lately. We don't have to depend on one person."
Now the focus turns to the Bobcats, who crushed M.C. Marquette 84-10 in the other semifinal. O-D defeated Westville 55-25 on Jan. 6. Marshall hopes his team can survive by keeping things to a half-court game.
"We couldn't break their press before; that's our biggest concern," Marshall said. "Anything can happen, and I thought we did well against them in the half court.
"Win or lose, there are a lot of other teams already sitting at home."

Creating a rebounding revolution
Posted by: Sports at 11:25PM EST on December 1, 2009
With two of the tallest players on the floor Tuesday against Munster, the Lake Central girls basketball team was still out-rebounded as the Mustangs picked up 23 defensive boards with 13 offensive. The discrepancy for the Indians: 13 defensive and eight offensive.

That the Indians won 45-41 against Munster had more to do with the 'Stangs' turnovers than what the Indians could do with put-backs.

"If we don't rebound against anybody, it's a disgusting game. If we don't rebound against Valpo on Friday, it's going to be even worse," Lake Central coach Leslie Iwema said. "We're going to be working on that for the rest of the week. It's going to be an interesting week."

For the Indians, 6-foot-6 Andrea Kras led her team with seven rebounds, including three in the fourth quarter while 5-10 Britney Tuskan had five rebounds.

On the Munster side of the stat sheet, 5-11 Gabby Roque had 11 rebounds, seven of them defensive and Jennifer Walton (at 5-7) and Alex Fimbianti (at 6-1) had seven total rebounds each.

"We did a good job on the boards and they only scored 45 points," Munster coach Matt Backs said. "But they caught us in a few defensive lapses and got it back to Andrea and got right back in it."
