Valparaiso gymnastics coach Lorie Cook defines sophomore Steffanie Long in one word: consistent.

Long remains consistent even though her floor exercise continues to evolve. Long finished second overall at the Chesterton Sectional with a 9.725 with a routine that was different than the one displayed at last week's Duneland Athletic Conference meet.

"We seem to change it up all of the time," Long said. "Every meet, I seem to be doing something new.

"It's not a problem. It's not like we're overhauling the routine."

Portage gymnastics coach Karen Barcelli must now live up to a promise, since her team advanced to the regional for the first time in 14 years.

"I now have to get a tattoo," Barcelli said. "The girls are going to design it for me."

Barcelli is just happy to see her team make some history.

:"I had call down to the IHSAA to find out the last time we qualified," she said. "It was too old to appear online."

Saturday's Chesterton Sectional was a bittersweet day for Portage gymnastics coach Karen Barcelli. Barcelli's freshman daughter Mackenzie helped the Indians advance to the regional for the first time in 14 years. Older sister and Wheeler senior Sydney Barcelli was also supposed to compete at the meet, but she injured her knee during practice Wednesday.

Sydney Barcelli helped out her mother by supervising Northwest Indiana Gymnastics Center's Club 3 team at a state meet Saturday in Hobart, but the senior wanted to be elsewhere.

"She really wanted to be at (sectional)," Karen Barcelli said.

Chesterton picked up four overall top seeds for Saturday's IHSAA state swimming finals, but another accomplishment also received praise from Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel.
The 400-yard free relay team of Taylor Zakhar, Nate Schuster, Joe Gerard and Matt Rosiecki advanced to the consolation finals. Chesterton entered Friday's prelims as the 28th seed (3:21.12). The foursome shaved a little under seven seconds in their heat (3:14.68) to put the team in position to score points.
"They did a great job," Kinel said. "That will help for the final round."
Olson pushes on

Chesterton junior diver Alex Olson struggled to maintain his focus during the championship round at Saturday's LaPorte Sectional.

Olson trailed teammate and senior Jake Brehmer by under two points after the morrning's semifinal round. During practice for the finals, Brehmer missed on an inward 2 1/2 and banged his head on the board. Brehmer was taken to the hospital and reportedly admitted stitches to close a wound on the top of his head.

Olson tried to maintain his composure.

"Alex was really upset," Chesterton diving coach Dan Vondrasek Sr. said. "It was a tough thing to go through."

Olson persevered and finished fourth overall with 410.2 points to take the final spot for Tuesday's South Bend Riley Regional. Even after the event was completed, Olson still struggled with his emotions.

"It affected me," Olson said of Brehmer's accident. "He texted me and said that he was feeling better. He wanted me to do it for him."

Brehmer finished second at the Duneland Athletic Conference meet a few weeks ago, and the Trojans hoped to advance two divers to state.

The accident was also a shock to swimmers on the squad.

"What happened was pretty upsetting," said Kyle Whitaker, a six-time individual state champion. "You really feel for him."

The swimming postseason will be a little different for Chesterton senior Kyle Whitaker. Whitaker, a six-time individual state champion, will be competing in the 500-yard free at Thursday's LaPorte Sectional prelims. Whitaker is a three-time champion and state record holder in the 200 individual medley (1:45.25) and 100 fly (47.85). He'll only be swimming the 200 IM this postseason.

"(The 500 free) is an event Kyle has wanted to do for a while," said Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel, whose team is the two-time defending state champions. "We just haven't been able to do it before with our setup. This time we thought we would give him a shot."

Whitaker, a University of Michigan recruit, has the fastest-posted time of the year (4:28.23). At the state finals, that times has only been eclipsed twice. 2002 North Central's Brian Hartley holds the state record (4:25.73), and 1998 Penn grad Jason Mallory swam a 4;26.25.
